Scientists from Cambridge “rehabilitated” coconut oil

In June 2017, the American Heart Association declared that coconut oil is harmful, claiming that it is saturated fat and raises cholesterol. This claim has been controversial as coconut oil has always been touted for its health benefits.
However, many studies support the positive effects of coconut oil on health. The authors of recent studies claim that regular consumption of coconut oil in just one month will reduce the chances of heart disease and stroke.

94 volunteers aged from 50 to 75 years participated in the study. Subjects who did not have diabetes or heart disease were divided into three groups, each of which consumed 50 g of a certain product daily. The first group used extra-refined coconut oil, the second group – extra-virgin olive oil, and the third group – butter.

After four weeks, a third group consuming butter confirmed a 10 percent increase in LDL, the “bad cholesterol.” The second group saw a small decrease in “bad cholesterol” and a 5 percent increase in HDL cholesterol, or “good cholesterol.”
However, for the first group, HDL cholesterol increased by 15 percent. This means that just one month of regular coconut oil consumption reduced the risk of heart disease or stroke.
